Mary Kay with the amazing Tracy Grodsky-Dunn

I had the recent pleasure of attending an event for Mary Kay with Tracy Grodsky-Dunn, and I know this is going to sound strange, but those two hours of the early morning affected me more on the inside than on the outside—where Mary Kay traditionally focuses its skin care products.  It was the impact of the words spoken, the collaboration and clapping for one another vibrated around the room.  The positive words from the speaker resonated with me; I was mesmerized by every word she spoke.
I’m not sure what she was thinking, but it could have been, “‘I’ve got them all hooked now,” or, “I’m going to rock this group and leave,”  but that’s not what I felt.  I felt her kindness, her willingness to see every woman in the room grow to their fullest potential.  I felt that she’d come from humble beginnings and was proud of where she’d taken her life.  She controlled her destiny and was very passionate about it.  She touched my heart in a way I didn’t think was possible at a Mary Kay Consultant meeting; she truly celebrated being a woman!  Words that kept chiming through the air during those two hours were words like: praise, enrich, dream-givers, faith, family, give back, compliment, and even queen.  I walked to my car afterward feeling warm and proud to wear lipstick and heels!
The only thing missing from those two hours were snacks.  And since my stomach wasn’t playing fair with my happy thoughts, I decided to stop at a local coffee shop in Boulder (which is hard to find!) to grab a snack and some tea. I saw a Starbucks and bounced in, the speaker’s positive words still swimming in my head. I smiled at the barista, she smiled back and asked how I was. I told her the truth—that I felt an inexplicable joy to celebrate who I am—and to eat!  My attitude must of have been contagious because we found ourselves handing out compliments all around, laced with giggles and grins. Behind her, the other barista chimed in and she said was getting a cavity with all this sweet stuff flying out of our mouths!
It seemed hard for the recipients, all young and lovely ladies, to receive, embrace, and believe in the compliments being given.  The barista and I had to turn the moments around into jokes.  That’s when I realized that compliments are to take in and embrace. We never did say “thank you” for the kind words to another, our laughter simply faded and it was onto the next customer in line. Then I heard the words, “Venti, Black English, unsweetened tea,” and there on the cup was the name of my new alter-ego, “Ruth,” given to me by my best-friend from the two minutes past. The rapport that women can develop in just a brief instant is but one amazing example of how being a woman is to be celebrated.  So I challenge you to do exactly that: celebrate.  I’d love to hear your stories. Please comment and let me know how you celebrate being a woman!
